About No Good Asking
A profoundly moving exploration of our capacity to heal one another.
Ellie and Eric Nyland have moved their two sons back to Erics childhood farmhouse, hoping for a fresh start. But theres no denying it, their family is falling apart, each one of them isolated by private sorrows, stresses, and missed signals. With every passing day, Ellies hopes are buried deeper in the harsh winter snows.
When Eric finds Hannah Finch, the girl across the road, wandering alone in the bitter cold, his rusty police instincts kick in, and he soon discovers there are bad things happening in the girls house. With nowhere else to send her, the Nylands reluctantly agree to let Hannah stay with them until she can find a new home after the Christmas holidays. But Hannah proves to be more balm than burden, and the Nylands discover that the only thing harder than taking Hannah in may be letting her go.
No Good Asking Review
I really enjoyed this novel. The characters seemed realistic and credible, and the story itself was also very credible. I felt that Kimmel had an excellent way of portraying emotion and feeling without being gushy. Some reviewers have compared it to a Hallmark movie. I've never seen any of those, not being a TV person, but it does have a generally happy ending, or at least the suggestion of one. I could relate to the tension in the primary couple. The stress of dealing with the past memories of Christmas is so difficult for the wife, and the husband is locked in his own routines. Dealing with a child on the spectrum is also a daily challenge. I know this from having a husband on the spectrum. I can see how they are together but apart, and it's hard to make significant moves toward each other in such a dynamic. To me, it was clear to see why Ellie wouldn't want to make overt gestures of love and acceptance of Hannah, and yet to feel those things inside and be unable to express them. So many of us are broken and damaged in so many ways, and this book made that aspect of the characters as real to me as it is in my own life. One can only hope that the Nylands are able to navigate the next steps in the story to make things official.
Heartwarming and moving. Very well written in a manner to draw you right into the story.
An amazingly WONDRCPP . Pp wonderful book
I liked this book very much. You got to know each character right away. It was sad in places but uplifting in others. Good read
Loved the story, author does a great job of keeping the reader interested. She describes each character in full. Making them seem so real, so relatable, and so feeling. Hannah is a blessing in disguise and she does not even know it, In fact so is the whole Nyland family. Loved the book, will definitely look for more with this authors name on it
Read it! This is a beautiful story, guaranteed to pull you in and out of the cold right from the very start, allowing you to enjoy a warm and special Christmas with this very real-seaming family.
You will fall in love with the characters and then the book just ends. Nothing is tied up and its like they ran out of money and had to just end it!
Nice Book. A very easy read. Very abrupt ending though, but overall an enjoyable book!
Not a lot of depth to this story, but I liked the characters. The plot was rather predictable. All in all, a nice book to read after reading a couple of intense mysteries.
This book is real, it's raw, and it's very difficult to read at times, but it's such a tremendous book. The young girl in the story witnessed and lived through some truly awful things at a very vulnerable stage of life. The strained relationships within her "host" family were so true to life that I sometimes felt uncomfortable reading. Their personalities were so well-defined - so believable - that I felt I knew each of them. Fran Kimmel is a very talented writer and teacher. I think she probably does a lot of research before creating her stories. With two novels so far, she's become one of my favourite authors and I'm especially proud that she's Canadian!
An amazing story of brokenness and renewal, sucking you in from the very first page until the end. There is a wonderful feeling that a little girl can bring a family to healing, and herself as well.
Definitely not my favourite book. Short read. I found it somewhat depressing.
Absolutely Amazing! No book has ever touched or moved me as much as this one. It's remarkable how 1 brave but scared little girl can help change a whole family. Each with there own set of fears or problems. 5 plus stars
A terrific feel good novel! Very believable characters and plot.
captivating dark beginning. Well written and great plot.
